NY Folklore Society Annual Conference 70th Anniversary Year Saturday, March 15, 2014 The Strong One Manhattan Square Rochester, NY 14607 CALL FOR PROPOSALS For 70 years, the New York Folklore Society (NYFS) has held an annual conference, which has addressed or explored a particular theme. In this 70th anniversary year, the New York Folklore Society, the Children’s Folklore Review of the American Folklore Society and The Strong’s National Museum of play jointly offer this invitation to graduate students, experienced scholars, and public sector folklorists to present their research in a series of panels and paper presentations. Student presenters are encouraged to participate, in order to platform at a local conference to share their work and connect with other young academics from around the New York State and surrounding region. The NYFS seeks to encourage young scholars to continue their studies and become active contributors to the fields of folklore, ethnomusicology, anthropology and more. This conference presents students with the opportunity for feedback on works-in-progress and mentorship from the academy. Theme: The Folklore of Play – we welcome proposals for papers and multimedia presentations that document the role of folklore in human play and games, including verbal and nonverbal activities. Honoring the legacy of folklorist and child development scholar, Brian Sutton-Smith, whose collection is housed at The Strong’s Brian Sutton-Smith Archives of Play in Rochester, New York, we are particularly interested in folkloristic perspectives on human play and games. This multidisciplinary conference welcomes papers and presentations based on research in play, including verbal play found in narrative genres such as riddling, rhymes, and joke-telling; children’s play and games; ludic events; sport and contest; and the material culture of play as evidenced by toys. Submissions in the fields of folklore, anthropology, American studies, cultural studies, literature, ethnomusicology, film studies, ethnic studies, gender studies, social and cultural history, child development, and other fields are welcome.
