NY JETS -- SENDING THE WRONG MESSAGE TO KIDS EVERYWHERE Those of you who know me, know that I do not pay much attention to football. However, the NY Jets decision to sign Michael Vick really sickens me. This may be one of the few times, I have ever commented on a sports controversy. Michael Vick is not some poor kid forced by desperate circumstances into committing a crime in a momentary lapse of judgement. According to the judges remarks at his sentencing, (read the NY Times acountbelow) Vick financed the dog fighting operation, which was essentially a gambling enterprise that profited from horrific acts of animal cruelty. Wasnt there a time when having a connection with gambling would get any professional athlete kicked out of his sport? Pete Rose, for example, is apparently banned for life from the Hall of Fame for having betted on horse racing, basketball, and baseball. But, Vicks conviction for involvement in a gambling enterprise based upon the torture and exploitation of defenseless animals apparently doesnt bother the JETs organization. The JETS deserve to lose every game they play this season. nytimes/2007/12/11/sports/football/11vick.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
