NY PEEWEE RANGERS TAKE 2014 CHOWDER CUP CUP CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 2-1 WIN OVER HOCKEY ESSENTIALS BLUE FOXBORO, MA (August 3, 2014) – It’s never easy to win a championship. Despite tearing through the first four games of the Chowder Cup tournament, scoring 25 goals and yielding just 1, the New York PeeWee Rangers had to summon up a substantial amount of intestinal fortitude to prevail over a gritty Hockey Essentials Blue team in the final round of the 2014 Chowder Cup. Fortunately there was no lack of that special quality. Led by blue-chip goaltender Spencer Knight, the Rangers withstood a determined foe to win 2-1 and skate off with the Chowder Cup championship in the 2001 birth-year division. Just like the semi-finals earlier this Sunday morning, one thirty-minute period would decide it all. First goals are always important but never more so than in this one-period format. Hockey Essentials Blue burst out of the gate with a barrage of shots in the first five minutes, but goalie Spencer Knight displayed poise and skill turning every threat aside. Soon the Rangers found their stride led by a relentless attack from the line of Trevor Zegras at center, Luke Morris at left wing, and Aaron Aboodi on the right side. Eight minutes into the game, their skill was on display when Aboodi passed to Morris, who weaved his way through the slot and found an open Trevor Zegras. Zegras made no mistake as he roofed a backhander to give New York a 1-0 lead. Less than ten minutes later, just after the game passed the half-way point, the Morris-Zegras-Aboodi line struck again as Luke Morris finished off another strong shift by jamming a rebound home. The scoreboard read 2-0 PeeWee Rangers. As the minutes ticked down, the PeeWee Rangers gained more confidence and control with every shift. Time to uncork the ginger ale? Well, not so fast. Despite taking the game in hand, a flukey goal with just less than three minutes to go gave Hockey Essentials a ray of hope, as they now trailed 2-1. Hockey Essentials came on strong, pulling their goalie with 70 seconds left. They mounted chances but nothing more than that as Spencer Knight stood tall with strong support from the five skaters in front of him. With five seconds left in the game, Captain Dom Fensore sprawled to block a shot and, as the puck squirted out of the Rangers zone, the last seconds of the game ticked away. Final score 2-1 New York PeeWee Rangers. The 2014 Chowder Cup Championship was theirs, and it was mighty sweet. These kids who came so close in Quebec City deserved to win it all in a tournament, and now the Chowder Cup was theirs. Rangers center Patrick Moynihan, defenseman Garrett Sundquist, and goaltender Spencer Knight were named to the all-tournament team, while centerman Trevor Zegras who excelled throughout the journey was named the tournament MVP. From the honor of a training camp at the NHL Rangers practice facility to an outdoor game at Yankee Stadium to the incredible experience of the PeeWee International in snowy Quebec City and, finally, to the warmth of August in suburban Boston’s Chowder Cup, it has been a fantastic year and a wealth of memories for the 2013-14 PeeWee Rangers. Thanks begin with Mr. Glen Sather and the entire New York Rangers organization. Much gratitude also goes to the PeeWee Rangers management – Doug Messier and parents Gary Zegras and Laura McLinskey. Co-coaches Jeff Devenney and Paul Messier did a spectacular job of preparing the boys and strategizing for every game. Finally, kudos to the kids – the Pee Wee Rangers. At the Chowder Cup forwards Zach Mouzakes, Trevor Zegras, Blake Swiggett, Liam McLinskey, Luke Morris, Patrick Moynihan, Dom Fensore, Connor Carroll, and Aaron Aboodi were outstanding. The defensemen were superb – Cooper Moore, Ryan Pineault, Colby Bailey, Braden Doyle, Will Gilson, and Garrett Sundquist. Last and far from least, goaltenders Spencer Knight and Max Caouette closed the door and kept it shut. It’s been a great year. Congratulations to the 2014 Chowder Cup Champions – the New York PeeWee Rangers.
