NYIC Slow Session July 19, 14 Another week with screwed up - TopicsExpress

NYIC Slow Session July 19, 14 Another week with screwed up trains, as usual. When they finally get all the work done and things get back on a normal schedule everyone who takes the #7 train is going to get places absurdly early! My R train will also be screwed up this coming week so Ill miss Dempseys two weeks in a row. I met Frank heading for the shuttle bus and we rode to NYIC together. Richard Sutor was there already and we were the first after him. Felicia arrived soon afterwards followed by Arbo. I love the sound of Uilleann pipes. Arbo apologized for this that and the other concerning the tuning of his chanter but if you listen to enough uilleann piping your ear (or mine anyway) seems to accept the odd note here and there or the tendency to have a couple of notes in the wrong resister. I am pretty fussy about playing in tune on my fiddle so its peculiar that I accept an occasional tuning lapse but maybe its because Ive learned to expect it. Who knows? Gail showed up a little while later and that was all of us for this week. Gail is a newcomer and a bit of a beginner. I guess she must have played at some point in her life because she plays pretty well, she just doesnt know the music yet. I played as little as possible since my arm really does hurt. When it was my turn I stuck to simple slow tunes like Ashokan Farewell and Wild Mountain Thyme. I played the latter specifically so that Gail could hear it and have something easy to learn. Richard sang it and so did Gail so its a melody she knows. My lack of practice showed but I was mostly in tune. I really wanted to play Danny Boy but I skipped it. At some point Felicia tried my fiddle. Very flattering. She also talked Arbo into trying it. Yes, Im proud of it. Not bad for a first try. Maybe beginners luck but I did start with excellent wood and followed my books pretty well. As we approached four oclock I started Road to Lissdoonvarna and everybody jumped in right away. I still dont know Mug of Brown Ale so Felicia played it with a bit of a personal touch. We hung out a bit, cleaning up and packing fiddles. Frank, Gail and Arbo had already left. I got advice on my shoulders but I know its just going to take time. Mild exercise and avoiding excess pain is about it. I plan to play a bit every day. Thats it until Wednesday, if it doesnt rain. No Dempseys since all the trains I need will be shutting down early. I can get there but I cant get home without a hassle. Maybe the rest will be beneficial.
