NYSPHSAA ANNOUNCES BATTLE OF THE FANS FINALISTS LATHAM, NY - The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced four finalists for its first ever Battle of the Fans competition. The 2014 Finalists are (in alphabetical order) Norwich High School (Section IV), Pittsford Central School District (Section V), Pleasantville High School (Section I), and Skaneateles High School (Section III). Finalists were voted on after a committee viewed each school’s video and ranked them using specific criteria and a point system. Any NYSPHSAA member school was eligible to participate simply by submitting a three-minute video by January 11th showing its enthusiasm, positive energy, and originality. Other criteria included organization of fans at contests, leadership, and overall impression of the fan experience at games. Members of the NYSPHSAA staff will tour each of the four finalists at a home game over the next two weeks and shoot and edit video documenting the experience at the school. The staff will also meet with the schools student leaders and write stories about the experience. The videos and stories can be found on the NYSPHSAA website in the Overtime Sports section, in addition to links posted on Twitter and Facebook. NYSPHSAA will determine a winner based on the judging criteria listed above. They will also conduct a poll using Facebook as part of the formula to determine a winner. Votes will be weighted based on the number of students in each school. For example, 500 votes for a school with 1,000 students will carry more weight than 500 votes for a school with 2,000 students. The Facebook vote will be open from 9 AM on Tuesday, February 18th through 9 AM on Friday, February 21st. Anyone interested in voting, can visit facebook/nysphsaa. The 2014 winner will be announced February 21st and will be presented an award at the NYSPHSAA Boys Basketball State Championship presented by the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council March from 14-15. NYSPHSAA will also visit the winning school for an on-site presentation. NYSPHSAA’s goal in this new initiative is to promote sportsmanship from fans as a key part of educational athletics within its member schools.
