NYTs Fitness Maven/writer Gretchen Reynolds takes on the question we all wonder about. Q: Is yoga sufficient strength exercise for optimal health, or do I have to lift weights in a fitness center? A: Yoga enthusiasts arent going to be thrilled with answer. Depending upon the kind of yoga you practice, youll get some strength improvement--especially if you practice energetic Ashtanga or Bikram yoga. But, you might want to think of supplementing your yoga with something else, especially if you so a slower flow yoga. One fascinating study ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18053143 conducted in a metabolic chamber that measured caloric usage & heart rate, showed that yoga was equivalent in energy cost to strolling at 2 m.p.h. (That doesnt surprise me at all--having worn a HR monitor during yoga). Thats an intensity of exercise that, the study authors write, would “not meet recommendations for levels of physical activity for improving or maintaining health or cardiovascular fitness.” Conclusion: [I]f you downward dog, jog occasionally as well, and visit the gym to build full-body strength and wellness. Told you you werent going to be happy with the answer. OK guys, bring on the rebuttals!!
