Nail cutting needs to be a positive experience for cats and may - TopicsExpress

Nail cutting needs to be a positive experience for cats and may require a lot of patience especially if they have not always had good experiences to date. Start by simply touching their paw and treating them in a quiet area and when the cat is calm, then building it to touching and treating every paw, then start prolonging the duration of the touch - do a little bit of this every day in small sessions always within the cats comfort level. Gradually introduce the clippers and give treats at the sight of the clippers and then for the clipper coming near and then touching the paw, again all within the cats comfort level. Next, put your thumb on top of the paw and your fingers underneath for support, then gently press and the nails will extend. Clip only the very tip of the nail which is the nonliving cuticle. Dont go beyond the start of the curve in the nail and do not continue if the cat is struggling. Feed treats throughout the process and do only one or two nails at a time so you dont overwhelm kitty.
