Name: Jim George Email: JimmyG1970@hotmail Comment: Hi I am a descendant of Lt. Col Newton J. George, Private Thomas B. George, and most directly descendant from a Benjamin George who succumbed to wounds as a result of losing a limb at Antietam. They were all part of 1st Tennessee, Archer s Brigade. Jim, Thank you for your question. While I cannot enlighten you on Thomas or Benjamin, I can give you some information on Newton. Newton was well regarded within the brigade. General Archer said that [he] was always ready and anxious for the most daring service... He was commended for his command of the picket line on the evening of August 30, 1862, in Archers report on 2nd Manassas. At Fredericksburg the unit fought atop Prospect Hill and were the second regiment on the brigade right, supporting R. L. Walkers battalion of artillery. Newton was wounded in the index finger, right ear, and hit with shrapnel in the leg and had to be carried to the rear. At Gettysburg he fought in the first days actions and was captured when Frys brigade hit Hays 2nd Corps division at the angle. He was very upset he was captured and refused to give up his sword to anyone that was not a commissioned officer. He was told he would be run through if he would not relinquish the sword, which he promptly did. Sadly that is where I lose track of him in the war. I am ccing Phill Greenwalt who is our resident expert on Archers Brigade. Phill maybe able to shed some light on the story or point you in a direction to research. I hope this helps.
