Name of the Day: Were so proud of it, we put their name on it! Mon 21/07/14: RADCLIFFE in honor of the baby faced assassin that is Daniel Radcliffe; keeper of the fountain of youth, actor and life long wizard; on his birthday! Radcliffe emerged in Nottinghamshire after the 11th Century Norman invasion of England. This branch of the Radcliffe name or Radclive had changed their name from their French name De Mendrei. At around the same time in the 11th Century, a member of another Norman family, Nicholas de Tailbois, attained the manor of Radcliffe in Lancashire for his services to the Duke of Normandy in the conquest of England. Radcliffe derives from the Anglo Saxon for red cliff and refers to the red cliff of rock near Irwell and Radcliffe in Lancashire. As was common with the Norman Barons, de Tailbois dropped his French name in order to take up the name of his new English estates i.e. Radcliffe.
