Nancy Dell: Wild vs. farmed salmon; Are non-stick pans safe? 1. My New Year’s resolution is to eat more salmon. Is farmed salmon now safe?Amanda, Internet Only 1 farmed salmon is considered safe by consumer groups. That is a brand called Verlasso. I checked online and found no stores in Western Massachusetts that sell it. Other farmed salmon is still considered unsafe and bad for the environment. Experts at State University of New York at Albany recommend you limit eating farmed salmon to once a month. They found farmed Salmon from many countries including Norway and Canada had 10 times higher levels of PCBs, dioxins and pesticides than wild salmon. These pollutants come from the fishmeal and fish oil fed to the salmon. That was in 2002 and I could not find any more recent studies. I think if things have improved, the salmon industry would be letting us know. So for now, try to eat wild salmon. Since a healthful portion is just 4 ounces, the size of a deck of cards, it can be affordable. Haddock and talapia from the US are other good kinds of seafood. This allows the non-stick coating to spread evenly over the cookware when it is made. The Environmental Protection Agency suspects the fumes from PFOA may cause cancer. However, research funded by the Consumers Union found PFOA was released into the air and water in the pots and pans only when heated on high, above 356 degrees. They said the amount was small, varied with different brands, and declined with each use in some brands. So, if you use non-stick pans, be sure to keep the burner below high.
