Nancy Myers just posted about the effectiveness and beauty of the Dallas memorial to Kennedy. I agree. Here are some random thoughts about JFK. Random #1: Many folks hated JFK. He was trying to change the segregated lifestyle of the southern states. He was a Catholic and supposedly the US would soon be answering to Rome. Also, Many middle class citizens saw him as an uppity rich kid from the Ivy League. Many were not disappointed that he was shot. After the 3 day coverage of his life and death, I think more people saw what he was trying to accomplish. The mood after those days was somber and mostly respectful. Random #2: The Cuban blockade was a courageous act by JFK. I was in HS. and our history teacher was absolutely frightened. He had been in either the Korean War or WWII. and told us that Today could be the start of WWIII. Russia blinked first and that was averted. Random #3: I think the day he was shot was the closest thing I have seen to the mood of 9/11. People did not know what to do, who to believe or how to react. I believe that if It had been a Russian or a citizen of some hostile nation who shot him, that we might have gone to war with that country. I now have a lot of respect for him. Random #4: They kept showing the eternal flame today in Dallas. My son Rick and I visited the graves of JFK and RFK and both have eternal flames. I was standing there with a cup of coffee in my hand and my son remarked that when I die they were going to install an eternal percolator coffee maker on my grave. OK maybe I am a little addicted. Random #5 I was just coming out of a Biology class at Lipscomb College when it happened. I have visited the Dallas sight several times. It is always sobering. God Bless the USA and those that have given their lives trying to make it better.
