Nandala supporters protest his removal as leader of opposition Supporters of out-going Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP) Nathan Nandala Mafabi have protested his dismissal from the post. FDC leader Maj Gen (rtd) Mugisha Muntu, during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting over the weekend, appointed Bukhooli Central MP Wafula Oguttu as LOP. While Mr Mafabi pledged to work with his successor to build FDC into a party that can ascend to power in 2016, his supporters are up in arms, claiming he has not been rewarded for his service. Budadiri West MP Isaiah Sasaga says if Mafabi tells them to quit FDC, they will not hesitate. “We shall remain silent for now but re-launch silently for 2021. When God says Mr Mafabi will be President of Uganda, nobody will stop that. It’s a matter of time,” Mr Sasaga said, at one of the consultative rallies Mr Nandala held in Bukulo and Buyubo sub-counties, in his Budadiri constituency over the weekend. Sironko FDC chairman Polly Mugoya claimed Mr Mafabi has been witch-hunted by fellow MPs because he was strict on accountability. “Uganda has failed because it’s led by a soldier. FDC is failing because it’s has been led by soldiers. We wanted to test a civilian but because people didn’t allow it, what is in FDC is not different from what’s in NRM,” Mr Mugoya said. Mr Francis Magawa, an opinion leader asked Mr Mafabi to tell his supporters whether “to remain in FDC under certain conditions or go for a marriage of convenience with NRM.” Sironko Woman MP Famier Wadada said by sacking Nandala and replacing him with Wafula, Muntu had weakened FDC. However, Mr Mafabi calmed down his supporters. “We must remain united as a party. We must believe in our party and what it stands for because the journey we are walking is a long one and we are not yet there to help Uganda have good governance and democracy,” Mr Mafabi stated. FDC Secretary General Alice Alaso said efforts will be initiated to reach out to the Elgon area party supporters to explain the changes. “They should know that Mafabi was appointed by the same party leadership to be LOP. It would be politically suicidal and counterproductive to take such an action (quitting). We need to consolidate efforts to confront the current regime,” she said. Mr Ogutu said he was convinced by Mr Nandala to take up the post. “I will work with Mr Mafabi to build party structures ahead of the 2016 elections,” Mr Oguttu said.
