Narakasura was born of Mother Earth, when Lord Visnu lifted Bhumi devi from the ocean depths during His Varaha pastimes. But he turned out to be an evil asura who tormented even the Gods.Only after killing Narakasura, Satyabama realizes that she was an incarnation of Bhoomi devi and that she had killed her very own son Narakasura. While Narakasura was about to pass away, he asked a boon from his mother that the day of his death be celebrated with lights all over his kingdom. From that very day on, to honor the faith in Bhoomi devi that killed her own son to restore justice and peace, and to celebrate the end of a tyrannical rule, people to this day, light deepams (small oil lamps with wicks) on the eve of Diwali.
