Naramdaman nyo ba kahapon? Tandaan ang mga paalala sa ibaba sakaling makaranas ng lindol. Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon had a different wake up call this Sunday, January 11, when a magnitude 6.0 earthquake, which was tectonic in origin and 85 km in depth, hit at 3:30 AM. Before the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) finalized that the palpable shake was magnitude 6.0 in strength, it earlier reported that it was only magnitude 5.7. The US Geological Survey also had quite different findings, stating that it was actually magnitude 5.8. PHILVOCS confirmed that the quakes epicenter was 43 km southwest of the town of San Antonio in Zambales. Zambales may have received the strongest shake, but different parts of Metro Manila and Luzon were also significantly rocked. The Metro Manila areas that experienced Intensity IV, which is described as moderately strong, were Makati City, Pasay City, Pasig City, and Quezon City. The same intensity was also felt in Hagonoy, Bulacan, San Mateo, Rizal, and Obando, Bulacan. Further, Tagaytay City and San Miguel, Tarlac endured Intensity III tremors, while Baguio City and Batangas City sensed Intensity II jolts. PHILVOCS gave a heads up that aftershocks are to be expected. However, the agency clarified that there should be no reason for panic about a potential tsunami because the earthquakes strength was not enough to trigger seismic sea waves. As of writing, there have been no cases of casualties and damage to properties. For everyones reference, PHILVOCS encouraged that their tips found in their Earthquake Preparedness Guide be followed: If possible, quickly open the door for exit Duck under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it, or protect your head with your arms Stay away from glass windows, shelves, cabinets, and other heavy objects Beware of falling objects. Be alert and keep your eyes open Stay away from trees, power lines, posts, and concrete structures Move away from steep slopes which may be affected by landslides If near the shore and feeling an earthquake, especially a strong one, quickly move to higher grounds in anticipation of possible tsunamis kickerdaily/earthquake-rocks-metro-manila-and-other-parts-of-luzon/
