Narcissists often believe that their INITIAL perception and interpretation about anything they see, hear, or feel is absolute, complete, accurate and correct. Anyone with a different interpretation or perception is therefore INCORRECT. They seem to believe that their sensory and processing equipment have machine-like precision, and dont need calibration, maintenance or testing, and cant be off or wrong. In other words, it doesnt even occur to them to second-guess or doubt what they see, hear, feel, or believe, about events or about other people, about information theyve read or heard, or about conversations from five seconds ago. ~If someone else has a different account of an event, a different point of view, a different opinion or has different INFORMATION, that person MUST BE WRONG. ~If something or someone turns out to be different from what they thought, believed, or assumed, theyll often either pretend they never said anything at all, or theyll pretend they had that correct opinion, information, or point of view ALL ALONG. ~If someone is holding them accountable to what they had said or done previously that proved to be incorrect, and they cant get away with pretending or manipulating, theyre likely to either fly into a rage or create some kind of diversion to change, avoid, or delete the entire subject. ~ So if Jerry, Joe and Jennifer see some kind of animal running in the woods behind their house at night, each person interprets what they saw to the best of their ability. Jerry thinks it was a deer, Joe thinks it was a cougar, and Jennifer thinks it was a large dog. Jerry speculates that it could have been a cougar or a dog. Jennifer speculates that it could have been a deer or a cougar. Both Jerry and Jennifer wonder if it could have been something else altogether, but they want to see if theres any fur or some tracks in the woods. Joe (who has Narcissism) is absolutely positive that the ONLY THING it could have been is a Cougar, because thats what he saw. It could NOT have been a deer, a dog, or anything else, it was a Cougar. AND... Joe does NOT want to go looking for fur or tracks, even to prove that it was indeed a Cougar, because... what other proof do you need? HE SAW IT! And his eyes, ears, and brain are like a state-of-the-art computer system! Unlike the lowly inferior senses and intelligence of Jerry and Jennifer... THEY were probably wrong... but he definitely wasnt, and he never is. All theyre going to find in the woods is acorns and leaves, but if theyre lucky, theyll find COUGAR TRACKS. Because it was a Cougar. So why even look...? So... when it turns out that the neighbors Great Dane was loose and running through the woods, Joe becomes suddenly very sullen and moody... and hes TOO BUSY to talk about the dumb woods or the dumb animals in the dumb woods, and its a stupid subject anyway...and he has important things to do... and by the way if that dog gets out again hes going to shoot it... and if he doesnt, the COUGAR is probably going to get it anyway... and dogs shouldnt be allowed to run around loose, and hes going to call Animal Control! Those people shouldnt have a dog... .... .... Great Danes dont make good pets... .... etc....
