Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi presented the award carrying Rs one lakh in cheque, a citation and other gifts. Stressing the importance of culture and literature in building a better society, Gogoi assured that his government would take up the necessary steps to add momentum to the cultural movement in the State. Gogoi said that the different genres of art including the performing arts have contributed towards forging unity and understanding amongst the different groups here. “The contribution of the literary and cultural stalwarts succeeded in ushering a new era of creativity in the social landscape and we are planning to keep the memory of these illustrious sons of the soil alive through a host of initiatives like instituting awards, naming streets or installing busts and statues in different parts of the state after them,” said Gogoi calling upon the people to support the efforts of the government to infuse vitality into the cultural scenario. On the other hand, Gogoi mentioned that the artistes in the State have been coping with many problems including financial crunch and said that the government would do the needful to address the issues of the artistes including the long standing demand to hike the pension of artistes. Extending his gratitude to the Government and the people for the honour conferred on him, Nipon Goswami who has many hit Assamese movies to his credit said that the government must earnestly come forward to rejuvenate the Assamese film industry. Goswami who is deeply associated with theatre and has acted in more than 300 Assamese and Bengali dramas called for setting up mini cinema halls across the length and breadth of the State. “I appeal to the government to hike the pension of artistes to minimum Rs 10,000,” urged Goswami further observing that under the prevailing situation in the State it was of paramount importance to bring lasting peace and to protect the interests of the indigenous communities.
