Nathaniel was transferred from the NICU to the general pediatric - TopicsExpress

Nathaniel was transferred from the NICU to the general pediatric unit on Saturday afternoon. Nathaniel continued drinking well throughout the rest of the day, but he still didn’t seem to be completely recovered from the past week’s sedation when he went to bed. He was easily startled and he seemed unusually sensitive and annoyed by sounds that would normally not bother him. This (Sunday) morning Nathaniel awakened at about 3:00 crying for a bottle. I actually felt glad he did this. It was good to see that his appetite was still going strong. Also, this was when he started showing great improvements in coming out of his post-sedation daze. He seemed much more interactive than before. This continued even more as the morning progressed. Nathaniel did seem to suffer quite a bit from a diaper rash last night and this morning. It looked like a painful one. I think this was the first one he has ever had and it was likely a side effect of the chemo and some of the strong antibiotics and other meds he has been on. We just kept changing him frequently to try to ease his pain and the rash seemed to have faded pretty well by the end of today. When holding Nathaniel late this afternoon, we noticed Nathaniel’s skin felt hot. His nurse had been checking his temperature throughout the day and it was fine, but early this evening, he had developed a fever. He has likely developed an infection of some type which we’ve learned is actually pretty common for people who have the AML type of leukemia. Nathaniel has started being treated with additional antibiotics and his demeanor has already shown improvement. Christina, who is with him tonight, said that he has already become more playful. So, when things are put into perspective, Nathaniel does seem to be doing better than he was a week ago when he was sedated. His health still has plenty of room to improve. Please continue to pray for complete healing and protection from the leukemia, infections, respiratory issues, and anything else that could put Nathaniel’s well-being at risk. Thank you.
