National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill gets President’s Approval The National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Bill, that seeks to scrap the collegium system of appointing judges to higher Judiciary, has received the approval of the President on 31 December. The NJAC Bill facilitates the setting up of National Judicial Appointments Commission, replacing the 20-year-old collegium system.The Bill, passed by Parliament in August 2014, paves the way for the setting up of NJAC, which will appoint and transfer judges to the Supreme Courts and the 24 High Courts. The Bill, a Constitutional Amendment Bill, grants Constitutional status to the NJAC and its composition which will be headed by the Chief Justice of India. World’s Smallest Goanna Lizard Species Discovered In Australia Australian scientists have discovered the world’s smallest goanna lizard – weighing barely 16 grams – in a remote region of the country. The new species has been named Dampier Peninsula Goanna while its scientific name is Varanus sparnus. The Western Australia Museum announced the discovery of the new species of goanna lizard from the Kimberley region.The discovery of this species is significant as it is the world’s smallest species of Varanus lizard. This single genus has 77 species, with the new species the 78th one.
