National Recording Registry adds two blues songs Library of Congress National Recording Registry has added its required 25 songs for 2013 and two are blues songs: Caldonia by Louis Jordan (1945) and Dust My Broom by Elmore James (1951). The National Recording Preservation Act of 2000 requires the addition of 25 recordings each year that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and are at least 10 years old. The Registry now totals 400 recordings, which is a very small part of the Library’s complete recorded sound collection of more than 3.5 million items. The Library is currently accepting nominations for the next registry at the NRPB website (loc.gov/nrpb). A quick spin through the list tells me we have some work to do. Little Walter and Willie Dixon are both on the list for the same song, but I didn’t see Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Koko Taylor, etc., etc. etc. The public can vote, so go ahead and nominate some of your favorites.
