National SC allows new schedule for LB poll ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday disposed of the Local Body Election (LBE) matter with the note that Election Commission of Pakistan could announce a new schedule for LB poll. Letter submitted by (ECP) demonstrates seriousness of the Government and the ECP to hold LB elections CJ maintained. A three-Judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chuahdry, comprising Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Amir Hani Muslim heard the case to hold LBE throughout the country and in the cantonment areas. Chief Justice maintained that its ECP prerogative to give the date to conduct elections, apex court can just look at whether Article 140-A and 32 of the Constitution of the Pakistan were followed or not he added. Chief Justice while dictating the order said its the Government and State duty to execute the constitution, and to protect the fundamental right of the people. Only the ECP made formal request to postpone the elections on some procedural and technical grounds where as no request was submitted by any province for the delay, order dictated. Chief Justice said the Supreme Court would not made any formal observation on the letter of ECP which was later converted into a petition, now the ball is in ECP court what date commission fix on it, it is up to it, CJ maintained. According to the letter submitted in the registrar office, ECP requested for extension of poll dates for holding LBE in the provinces and cantonment areas. ECP had proposed revised poll programme for the election while giving the dates for province of Punjab as January 30, for Sindh January 18, and for KPK and cantonment areas as February, 2014. As far as the province of Balochistan is concerned, polling shall take place on the date of, as per schedule on December 07, 2013, letters outlined. Later, the apex court asked the commission and provencial governments to set the dates after their consent. After which, the ECP is now likely to formally announce a new schedule for all four provinc. APP (Associated Press of Pakistan)
