Concept Note: Negotiation of cultural transactions seems to open up new dimensions of critical research in a globalised world order. Recent literary studies seek to explore diverse fields of transaction and exchange that disseminate multiple cultural formations. “Transactions” as a major discursive frame comes to terms with flexible patterns of “episteme”. It also seeks to contest the disciplinary, modular forms of ‘epistemic’ and ‘ontological’ correlation. It reminds us of Jameson’s configuration of ‘Bonaventure Hotel’ as a central paradigm with multiple, unpredictable exit / entrances that generate a postmodern frame of complex cultural disjunction. “Transaction” is, therefore, polysemic in so far as it addresses and takes issues with modular, interpretive formations. “Transaction” is, therefore, an ideology, a praxis, a form of critical negotiation. Text and textual traces remain virtually open ended and it largely builds on multiple cultural problematics that come to explore various subject positions. In other words, cultural transactions seem to be involved with Clifford Geertz’s ideal of “thick description” that encourages fragmented, disjunctive narratives of textual / cultural segments. Text and culture may, therefore, be posited in multiple contextual specificities and move towards diverse forms of subjectivities. This seminar will address, but not strictly limited to, the following issues: Transactions and Exchange Cultural Exchange in a Postcolonial Context Text, Culture and the Hyperreal Text, Space and Subjectivities History, Narratives and Subjectivities Transactions and Theoretical Formulations Submission of abstract: We encourage submission of abstracts along with a brief bio-note by e-mail.
