National Survivor User Network, NSUN news - National Crisis Care Summit 2014 NSUN took part in the Crisis Care Concordat National Summit on the 27th November, a full day programme to consider the progress and improving practice since the launch of the Concordat in February. The focus was on what more we could all do to ensure that people in mental health crisis situations receive the most appropriate support in the most appropriate place. The four key areas for action are: -Access to support before crisis point -Urgent and emergency access to crisis care -Quality of treatment and care when in crisis -Recovery and staying well Speakers included Norman Lamb, Minister of State for Care and Support, Mike Penning, the Home Office Minister for Crime and Policing, as well as NSUN’s Regional Development and Research Manager, Naomi James in conversation with Director of NHS England, Dr Geraldine Strathdee. Naomi presented the results of the membership survey outlining the NSUN Top Ten issues to be improved by the next summit in 2015. Naomi James continued: “People are dying…there are radical changes we need to see and a culture change we need to drive. Here are four key themes: Respect and dignity – we need to stop punishing people in distress, we need to stop the use of prone restraint. Continuity and security – do not underestimate the impact of voluntary sector organisations, peer support and self-management. Respite and recuperation- we need to see more people accessing personal budgets to stay well and it’s a certainty we need more that 46 crisis houses across the country. Creation of optimism - The fragmentation of services and support go hand in with the fragmentation of minds. We must invest so that people can fulfil their potential. We must stop people feeling disillusioned. We must invest in involvement.” Across the country, groups of agencies are making plans for how to work together to better provide crisis mental health care. To date, NSUN have joined as one of 25 partner organisation signatories for the North West London-wide Crisis Care Concordat Declaration and action plan here. crisiscareconcordat.org.uk/explore-the-map/
