Nationalism is a foolish thing. I always thought it was our country and we would look after it as good or as bad as we were able. I couldnt be anything else except Irish, so whats the point of going round proclaiming I am Irish? If a Frenchman or Englishman were proclaiming they were French or English I would think there was something wrong with them. One is given the place one is born into, but first and last one is a human being. And the humanity is much more interesting than the locality or nation. The Irish novelist & short-story writer, JOHN McGAHERN. Spoken like a true artist, who uses the particular, the specific, the finite, the local, the ephemeral, ONLY as a means, a tool, a conduit, to the universal, the eternal, that held in common, that which binds rather than divides. All of which explains why the great artists(writers, poets, painters, sculpters, etc) so often succeed where/when priests, ministers, theologians,(politicians?), etc. fail. Just a thought.....
