Nationwide ceasefire expected to be signed soon: NCCT Published on Monday, 18 August 2014 00:32 The Union Peacemaking Working Committee and Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team meet at the Myanmar Peace Center on August 16 (Photo – Aung Zaw Tun/EMG) A nationwide ceasefire is expected to be signed soon between the government and ethnic armed groups, and political dialogue likely to get underway with ethnic groups, political parties, and others, Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) leader Naing Han Tha has said. Naing Han Tha made these remarks yesterday, the second day of a coordination meeting between the Union Peacemaking Working Committee (UPWC) and the NCCT at the Myanmar Peace Centre in Yangon. “Our negotiations have developed a lot and I hope both sides will soon reach agreement and sign the ceasefire agreement shortly. I believe that we will be able to carry out political dialogue soon,” Naing Han Tha said. Minister Aung Min also said he was satisfied with the outcomes of yesterday’s meeting. On the first day of the meeting, Aung Min told ethnic leaders that the worries of both sides are suspicions that are typical in peace processes. The government is seeking to strengthen its ceasefire arrangements and get agreement on guarantees that are essential for holding political dialogue. Aung Min said if these basic foundations could be set down, the next government could implement peace processes after April 2015. He said: “Both sides have worries like ‘Will the other side deceive us?’ ‘Will they exploit the peace?’ Or ‘Will they collect arms and build up forces to restart the war?’ “In order to reduce these worries as much as possible, there will be many things to carry out after the nationwide ceasefire agreement has been signed. There will be more difficult challenges and things to do,” Aung Min said. Naing Han Tha said: “Actually, we have goodwill for our citizens to live in peace and especially become united and for our country to become more developed.” Although there have been suspicions on both sides in the past due to many years of armed conflict, agreement has been reached and peace is getting nearer so the public should take hope from the positive side of this, he said. elevenmyanmar/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7240:nationwide-ceasefire-expected-to-be-signed-soon-ncct&catid=32:politics&Itemid=354
