Nature Awareness 4/16/2014 - Prairie Dock Prairie dock is a wildflower that is a member of the aster family. It tends to do well in open ranges and with fertile, deep loamy soil. It needs very little rain to create great displays, and is a determined little lovely. One of the many wonderful things about it, other than its beauty, is its ability to recover quite successfully from wildfires. It takes an awful lot to keep prairie dock down, even though it is now stranger to tragedy after tragedy. Due to their wildflower beauty and lush texture, prairie dock has long been considered an enchanted flower, and a symbol of strength. In ancient times, it was thought that the perfume from their burning leaves could drive away evil serpents. Today, they’re known as a talisman of love and a symbol of patience as well. Symbolism: strength, endurance, enchantment, protection, love, patience.
