Nature Awareness 4/20/2014 - Hare The hare is associated with the Goddess Andraste (Andrasta, Andred), although we have very little information about her that we can refer to today. She is known primarily through the story about the Iceni Queen, Boudicca, who released a hare as part of a rite in which Boudicca was testing to see if the time was ripe to attack the Romans. It turned out she got good advice because her initial attack was successful - until the Romans regrouped later and ended the revolution in a slaughter of the Iceni and their allied tribes. In Ireland, there are numerous stories of shapeshifting animals, and the hare is one of many creatures that are thought to be the favored form of witches. There are some myths about white hares that indicate they were thought to be harbingers of death, or representing the soul of a deceased people. It was extremely foolhardy to kill such a hare as it would end all abundance for those who dared to do such a thing. In China, theres a hare (well, rabbit) who lives in the moon. You can see him up there, pounding herbs to make into medicines. Theres also a moon maiden, Chang-Er, whos either very vain or very noble, living up there in the moon with the Jade Rabbit. Sometimes he carries medicines down to earth for her, and sometimes he has to steal them. In the natural world, hares are known for their swiftness and their defensive and evasive maneuvers that allow them to survive. They are also quite successful at breeding new life and are therefore considered signs of abundance. Baby hares are also one of the signs that spring has begun to settle in. Concentrate on the hare today, and consider what it is you would like to have an abundance of in your life. Can you visualize it and then manifest that new life all around you? Are there areas in your life or people that you are realizing you should now avoid? Then use the swiftness and the cunning maneuvers of the hare to do so, that way you can begin to relax in areas that are safe and healthy for you. Abundance and survival are the two gifts the hare has to give to you. Symbolism: new life, abundance, fertility, swiftness, nervous energy, defensive maneuvers.
