Nature Awareness 6/1/2014 - Hellbender The hellbender is the only North American member of the giant salamander family, a group of three species notable for their exceptional size and wrinkled skin. It is a large, carnivorous, aquatic amphibian. The hellbender is usually green, brown, or gray in color and often displays darker spots throughout the skin. The hellbender is nocturnal and uses its flattened, spade-like head to dig out crayfish and other prey. This animal is known for its strong bite and slimy skin secretions. Female hellbenders lay their eggs in autumn and the males then guard the eggs until they successfully hatch. Since hellbenders live primarily in the water and yet use their heads to dig up prey in the earthen floor of their home, they have been considered ambassadors for emotional security, the grounding of watery emotions in an earthen base. This animal is also thought to protect its totem people against toxic situations since it has the ability in nature to secrete a rather undesirable slime for its own protection. People working with this animal also tend to have natural fire energetics that are present for most salamanders, a more nocturnal nature, and they are typically very unique in their presentation to the world. Meditate on the hellbender today. Are you comfortable in your own skin? Are you able to be your true and full self without fear of repercussions or a toxic situation developing? Do you feel emotionally grounded enough in your path? If not, ask the hellbender to help you with these issues so that you may develop and transform with the power of fire! Symbolism: emotional security, protection against toxic situations, fire energetics, unique being, nocturnal energy cycles, defense, sensitivity.
