Navajo I know we have some Navajo fans, and I get questions about him often. This is far from a good photo and I have it just for documentation, as hes actually very far away, and the image is cropped in. Being that my photo equipment is similar to a big blade of grass with the water bubble at the end as my magnifier/telephoto apparatus- comparatively to others equipment LOL, I try and do the best that I can with what Ive got . Navajo was very shy, but thanks to Terry Smiths megalens, he was able to i.d. him for us at the top of the hill. We thanked Terry and said our goodbyes, and Alice and I hiked it over the ankle-breaking lava rock about a half mile up. As you can see, Navajo has himself a pretty little mare and foal, and he was not about to let anything close to them, as he earned them hard and was not taking any chances. Last year, he fought for and earned a mare and soon after lost her again to another stud. This is the only image of him looking at us, after this he and his little family are running off to higher ground, but he continued to keep us in his sights to monitor us. There were several bands in this section, and he ran the direction of Copperhead and a smaller band of bachelors. Alice and I sat at the top of the hill, had lunch, and let all the horses settle. We chose not to follow Navajo, as being near Copperhead, Copperhead would let out a massive warning snort which could be heard at long range, and likely that would be enough to alarm all the other bands, and send them running, which would mean more hiking. So we thought better to slowly work our way to other mustangs we were not familiar with. They were standing on the crest of the next hill.... a perfect photo opp. We just hoped they would stay long enough to get them in a few frames.
