Ndumiso Mapholoba Ngcobo yesterday told me a story that simply killed me. We were at the Franschhoek Literary Festival. The fact that I havent forgotten it after all the drinking that took place afterwards should tell you how powerful it is. He says a few years ago he was in Bloem. He bought himself some ice cream, which he proceeded to lick. He was inside this shop, waiting for his other order to be prepared. In walked a family of quite dishevelled Afrikaans-speaking white people. (the importance of their race shall soon make itself evident). so, one of the boys is looking longingly at Ndumisos ice cream. He cant restrain himself anymore. So he says to Ndumiso: Oom kaffer, koop my roomys asseblief (to my American friends, that means: Uncle nigger, please buy me some ice cream). Ndumiso couldnt help himself: he burst out laughing.
