Ned Pakenham, the Duke of Wellingtons brother-in-law lost his life in the Battle of New Orleans 200 years ago today. Pakenham replaced Ross in charge of the British army when Ross was killed. Pakenhams sister lived in Carpenham across the street in Rostrevor from General Rosss widow. What chances that in such a small village. Pakenhams death forever immortalised in Johnny Hortons famous song which over half the audience joined in when I played it at the Ross conference in Rostrevor in October 2013.
