Need a driver license soon? Get it before Friday brings four-day shutdown of system Crystal Bonvillian | cbonvillian@alBy Crystal Bonvillian | cbonvillian@al on April 21, 2014 at 10:21 AM, updated April 21, 2014 at 10:22 AM The Alabama Department of Public Safety today announced a shutdown of its driver license database that will temporarily halt the departments ability to issue driver licenses. The shutdown will begin at 5 p.m. Friday and continue until 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, according to a news release from DPS. The shutdown includes online services. The four-day shutdown is being done so the DPS Driver License Division can complete a database conversion to remain in compliance with federal regulations. During that time, the division will be unable to issue, renew or reinstate any driver licenses, as well as non-driver identification cards. The DPS motor vehicle records and Alabama Uniform Crash Reports will also be offline. The shutdown is anticipated to affect not only driver licenses, but also probate offices, license commissioners offices and other agencies and businesses that involve Alabama driver license transactions or reviews, the DPS said. The timing was chosen to coincide with the April 28 Confederate Memorial Day holiday, during which all state offices will be closed, to lessen the impact on the public, the news release said. All services will resume at 8 a.m. on April 30. blog.al/breaking/2014/04/need_a_drivers_license_soon_ge.html#incart_river_default
