Need some inspiration? Yesterday, I received this heartwarming message from a fellow youth care compatriot in Scotland: I saw your post on Facebook and thought I would share a story from sunny Falkirk, Scotland. I attended your training in Falkirk and have subsequently changed my whole approach to BM. I am now reviewing and implementing a whole school strength-based system to build positive relationships and change the culture of our school in very deprived area of Falkirk. My real success story has been my class this year. I was asked to move from p2( 6 year olds) to p5/6 (10-11) to deal with the pupils that others had really been struggling with. One boy in particular spent his entire year out his class, and had every agency look at him as he was off the wall. I read his psychologists report and didnt know where to begin. He didnt work well in groups, wouldnt read out loud, and refused to do division in math. He also suffered from sore heads due to stress, and his constant refusal to do any work. I think you get the picture. Before the summer holidays, I approached him and all of the troubled pupils and said: I picked you. They couldnt believe it. Anyway, I put a positive system in place...greeting them every day with a big morning smile! Always saying please and thank you! Never raising my voice, externalizing negative behaviours! I focused on building a great relationship with this particular student (as well as the others) and now he is transformed. I reviewed his psychologists report and was able to score through everything she had said he wouldnt do. He now loves division in math and has won the class achievement award twice. And what really touched me the most: At parents night, his mom said I now have a happy boy and thats amazing . Regards, Andrew Denholm I read Andrews message as I departed a flight in Boston. It choked me up. All kids want to succeed and be happy. They just need folks like Andrew, you, me...in their corner. Never giving up. I now have a happy boy and thats amazing. Keep sending your tool anecdotes. Youre making the revision ever more powerful, inspiring, and relevant. Thank you!
