Need to Know Basis How tall was Jesus? What was his favorite food? What games did he play with His friends when He was a boy? Did He ever catch a cold? Near the end of his Gospel, St. John writes, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” John does not set out to share everything that there was to know about Jesus. John and the other evangelists do not try to answer every curious question about Jesus. His Gospel was not a multi-volume, tell-all biography about Jesus. Instead, John writes what people need to know about Christ Jesus. His Gospel is God’s revelation about the saving work of His Son. The teachings and signs that are included in John’s Gospel are recorded so that those who read the Word of truth may believe and therefore have eternal life. The reason that we continue to read God’s Word is because in it we receive life. Life in Christ permeates every page of the Holy Scriptures. Life in Christ is the central message of every sermon and the core content of every hymn. The revealed Word of God truly saves because it delivers to us life in Christ. May God’s Word be a source of strength for you in your devotional life as you read and study. For in the Word, we find all we need to know for salvation! Thanks be to God for the ongoing witness of the Scriptures through God’s Word written down by John and the other prophets and evangelists.
