Need to be Happy? This happiness recipe consists of four accessible, cost-free and simple ingredients. To help you remember these four components, I’ve created a four-letter acronym as a guide. Since happiness has a way of smoothing out the rough edges in life, I call it SILK: S – Steadiness: This component reminds me of the well-known Aesop’s fable involving the legendary race between the tortoise and hare. Even though the hare was extremely fast, the tortoise won the race with his cleverness and determination. The moral of the old story is that slow and steady wins the race. Speed isn’t always your friend when it comes to personal happiness. Finding happiness is often a positive side effect of success and accomplishment, both of which come from mounting and maintaining a slow and steady pursuit of the goal. I – Insight: Insight is defined as the ability to see and understand clearly the inner nature and true meaning of things and situations. In the pursuit of personal happiness, insight allows us to understand why we do the things we do and why we act the way we act. With insight, we can learn from our mistakes, avoid them in the future and create more happiness. L – Love: Love is one of the most essential and fundamental pillars that support happiness because it’s a strong emotional and psychological human need. I also see this component as being a two-way street. In other words, true happiness requires a healthy mixture of both giving and receiving love. A happy heart has love on the inside and outside, and I don’t believe true happiness is attainable without this precious human necessity. K – Know-how: Know-how is a different animal than knowledge. Knowledge is more of the formal accumulation of facts and information that we get through traditional learning methods. Know-how is the ability to be more street-wise and real-life capable. Knowledge gives you brain power; know-how provides you with a MacGyver-like creativity to address and solve problems. The better you are at problem solving, the happier you will be.
