Negligence pure and simple. Fortunately nothing bad happened or the situation never got worse. If that happened in the military, the member would be going up to see their Commanding Officer and face serious punishment. Question is, how often does this member screw up like this? Maybe being fired would be a little extreme, but instead remedial training with stricter guidelines and his partner having to constantly check/inspect him, or even making him re-attended the police academy. However if he has a history of constant screw ups then maybe more severe punishment is required
