Nehi Katawasisiw: Can someone please explain to me what the big deal in Canada is with calling white people white? I mean, c’mon, it’s a well documented historical fact that Europeans invented whiteness and coined the entire lexicon around whiteness themselves. So why do people in Canada seem to think it is some kind of legitimate claim saying that white and whiteness are not actually accurate concepts and terms for white people in Canada? I mean, it just is fgn weird. Period. And it reminds me of how offenders/batterers dominate discourse by dominating definitions in order to control how reality is understood & described. It makes me wonder if it is a form of power backlash, because there is a sub-movement amongst particularly vocal & rabid racists in Canada that are accusing indigenous people of being racist when they use the word white. This has actually happened while doing my graduate work at a Canadian university and came from other grad students. Systems of oppression and social dominance is my area of study so doing global research on how it presents is kinda my schtick....meaning in all the research I have done around systems of oppression & their various manifestations, only in Canada has this particular phenomenon really presented. To me it is representative of both a power backlash and illustrative of how irrational white privilege and a profound sense of entitlement can make people think & behave.
