Neil Gaunt has sent in this message about Dan-Air V.708 series Viscount G-ARIR that was leased from Alidair. He says;- When we came to the UK from Rhodesia, I got a job with Alidair at EMA and because my retired father had painted Viscounts for CAA and Air Rhodesia, Alidair asked if he could help them out by painting G-ARIR in Dan-Air colours. He said yes, and he, my wife and I spent a weekend painting the aircraft. I remember watching my wife walk along the top of the fuselage (she had a much better head for heights that me - I wonder how many other wives would have done that!). This Viscount was built for Air France as F-BGNS and first flew on Sunday, 30 May 1954 at Hurn, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England powered by Rolls-Royce Dart 505 engines. During its life it was also owned and/or operated by Danish Air Charter, Starways Ltd, Air Inter, Alidair, Dan-Air London, BMA - British Midland Airways, Guernsey Airlines, Inter City Airlines and Hards Travel/Janus Airways. Its fate:- Withdrawn from service by MMM Aero Services (3MAS) as 9Q-CAH and stored at Middelkerke, Ostend, Belgium in November 1984. Aircraft destroyed after being blown up using dynamite in March 1989. Remains broken up for scrap soon afterwards. Does anyone know the date it was scrapped?
