He is credited for being the inventor of Compas also known as compas direct in French, or Konpa dirèk in Creole or simply Konpa; a style of Haitian Dance music. Nemours Jean-Baptiste Biography by Paul Sanon Nemours Jean-Baptiste, born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on February 2, 1914, is the celebrated creator of Compas rhythm. An accomplished musician, he played the banjo, and saxophone, composed and arranged music. Nemours, the ideal bandleader, attended Jean-Marie Guilloux primary school. He started as a banjo player and was exposed to talented musicians like guitar player Antoine Duverger, saxophonist Victor Flambert, Antoine St-Armant and Chardavoine.To make ends meet, he became a part-time barber. After acquiring some musical experience, the young Nemours traveled south and joined the Barrateau Destinoble Jazz ensemble as a guitar player. While the band was barnstorming the southern end of Haiti, he seized the opportunity to learn the sax under the guidance of the sax player Barrateau Destinoble. Known as great musician, multi-instrumentalist, saxophonist, band leader, and composer he attended Centrale des Arts et Metiers. Sicot, under the tutelage of Augustin Bruno learned the rudiments of music while there. Later He was privileged enough to be exposed to other great musicians such as Francois Guignard. Sicot made his professional debut in Jazz Capois of Claudin Toussaint. He later fluctuated between Jazz des Jeunes and Orchestre Saieh. In 1957, with Guy Durosier, Webert recorded with El Saieh one of the best albums in Haitian music history. Later on he joined successively the Conjunto International of Nemours Jean-Baptiste, Orchestre Citadelle, Casino International band, and Orchestre Latino, La Fleche dor des freres Sicot.
