Netherlands approves a ban on wild animals in circuses The Netherlands joins the list of other European countries that have prohibited the use of wild animal species in circuses. The additional countries include Austria, Belgium, Croatia and Estonia, whilst two countries, Greece and Malta, have prohibited all animals in performances (including circuses). The decision for the ban by the Netherland Government has been in consideration for some time, but following confirmation on Saturday 13th December 2014, it has been concluded that the ban will be in place from 15th September 2015. Supported by The Ministry of Economic Affairs in The Hague; The health of animals is more important than their use for parties or clinging to outdated traditions, said Secretary Sharon Dijksma. Meanwhile the German Animal Welfare Association has been fighting for years, in vain, for a nationwide ban on the use of wild animals in circuses and in the UK, efforts to bring about such a ban in England, through a Private Member’s Bill, has now been blocked an unbelievable seven times. The debate in the UK Parliament will again be heard on 9th Jan 2015.
