Neutrino detectors are such cool things. Physics professor Kevin McFarland and doctoral student Aaron Mislivec -- in a new experiment at the MINERvA detector at Fermilab -- have found evidence describing what they call a “weird little corner” of the already weird world of neutrinos. While neutrinos are famous for almost never interacting -- ten trillion neutrinos pass through your hand every second, and fewer than one actually interacts with any of the atoms that make up your hand -- this experiment shows that sometimes neutrinos can also interact with a nucleus but leave it basically untouched – inflicting no more than a “glancing blow” – resulting in a new particle being created out of a vacuum. rochester.edu/newscenter/researchers-show-neutrinos-can-deliver-not-only-full-on-hits-but-also-glancing-blows-84012/
