Never again! Ever!!!!! Will I dis-bud or de-horn future baby goats...never, ever again!! The most humane way, I learned, was using castration bands to cut off the circulation but this obviously took the frolic out of the 3 females that started growing horns. Theyre tender and sore and looked really sad. When they cry, they cry loud and I know its because they bumped them. So when a black bear cub came down my driveway, curious, until the dogs barked wild and scared it away; it was then, I freaked. What am I doing? My goats are in the wild. They need to protect themselves. Im taking these damn bands off that are only hurting them. I got them off one baby and the second baby, I got one band off. But she screamed so loud when I went for the second that I had to stop. It was killing me that it hurt her so much. I guess shell be a unicorn now but one horn is better than none. My bottle baby, I didnt even bother. She had been crying 3 days and the bands are too embedded now. Ill no doubt, have nightmares tonight. I cant get the sound of Marys wee one screaming in pain. She may never trust me again and she was the first, of them all, to cozy up to me. As for my docile bottle baby, who is stuck with this now, I spent an hour just loving her and apologizing for the agony of this barbaric thing people do to goats to make it more convenient and profitable. Live and learn. My goats are my teachers. :(
