Nevers Mumba Rents UPND Cadres When the former President of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Nevers Mumba attempted to storm the party secretariat yesterday to demand his reinstatement, he was accompanied by a group of cadres on loan from the competing United Party for National Development (UPND), a source close to Mumba tells Zambia Reports. The MMD has been consumed by internal wrangles ever since the National Executive Committee (NEC) voted to suspend their Party President Dr. Mumba, 37 votes out of 55 NEC members, after he attempted to block the adoption of former President Rupiah Banda to serve as the party’s candidate in the upcoming January 20, 2015 presidential by-election. The drama at Zambia’s largest opposition party comes shortly after a scandal involving a foreign conspiracy by wealthy South African mining interests to install UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema as president. According to African Confidential, the publication which first broke the story, Nevers Mumba was summoned to visit South Africa and allegedly hired to sabotage his party and support UPND after the mining companies failed to secure a deal with former President Banda. However, the source tells Zambia Reports that Dr. Mumba’a support from the UPND may be shortlived, as the party does not believe the former televangelist has any substantial support to bring to the party. In particular, Dr. Canisius Banda, the UPND Vice President for Politics wants to cut off Nevers, the source says. “Dr. Banda is the leading voice against incorporating Nevers Mumba into the UPND – the fact that they had to give him UPND cadres, that fact that he’s never won an election, means that UPND understands that Nevers has no real support,” the source said. “Canisius is refusing to clear away other party loyalists in order to make room for Nevers, who was promised a Vice President position in the party in exchange for helping sabotage MMD.
