Nevers Mumba’s Only Purpose Was to Block RB – Sinyangwe Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Women National chairperson Faustina Sinyangwe has said the party’s presidential candidate Dr Nevers Mumba knows that cannot win an election, and that his purpose in stealing the nomination was to block Rupiah Banda. Sinyangwe said Dr Mumba cannot win the forthcoming presidential poll on January 20, 2015 because he was not a popular candidate, who should have given the opportunity to former Republican President Rupiah Banda to scoop the seat for the party. She said Zambians would hear of the proverbial camel going through the eye on a needle in Egypt if Dr Nevers Mumba won the coming presidential election. “Even deep down his own heart of hearts, Dr Mumba knows that the is not a factor in the coming elections. He cannot win and it is a spoiled opportunity for the party. Dr Nevers Mumba has successfully killed the MMD and he will sink with it if we are not careful. He has this egoistic and bad pride that he does not want to listen to advice. As a party, we brought former president Rupiah Banda because he can win us this election and if Nevers was a clever and intelligent man, he would have supported him so that the seat could be his in 2016. Now Nevers is headed for a very big shame,” she said. Sinyangwe said she would not support Dr Mumba in his political campaigns because it was clear that Dr Mumba was not going to win the next election. She said Dr Mumba must learn to listen to listen to advice from the national executive committee instead of taking irrational decisions. Ms Sinyangwe is one of the MMD national executive committee members who voted for the decision to bring back former president Rupiah Banda to contest the next elections on the former ruling party ticket. When voting for this decision, the national executive committee said Rupiah Banda was the best candidate to go for the elections and be a caretaker president before handing over to the next president after the 2016 general polls. There were protracted negotiations between Dr Mumba and Rupiah Banda in which Dr Mumba demanded that a memorandum be signed so that he is given the republican vice presidency with a number of cabinet positions and other benefits. After this memorandum was authored, Dr Mumba made a u-turn and refused to sign it, opting to go for the MMD candidacy himself. “We are so disappointed with Nevers Mumba. He made commitments in the beginning but he decided to change his mind. His actions are not in the interest of the party. He has other motives and objectives,” Sinyangwe said. But Dr Mumba said he was the MMD presidential candidate and no one was going to stop him, adding that his campaign programme was going on very well. He said he was certain to scoop the next elections because the MMD had structures across the country and his support was growing by the day.
