Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the masters use, and prepared unto every good work. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (2 Timothy 2:19-22) Two things I want to point out here: 1. Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. If you do not, then you are guilty of breaking the third commandment--taking the Lords name (claiming to be a Christian) in vain (in emptiness, uselessly). 2. If a man therefore purge himself from these [iniquity, sins], he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the masters use, and prepared unto every good work. YOU must attend to this yourself. It is a false doctrine that teaches that the Holy Spirit is going to sanctify us as we continue living the way we did before we professed faith in Christ. Faith without works (actions that prove it) is dead. If you are truly having faith in Christ and committed to Him (as you must be, to be saved), then you must be committed to live differently . . . to turn your back on the sins you once loved. (If you will not turn from your sins, then you have not repented--which you also must do, to be saved.) WE must choose to act differently. None of us, in ourself alone, has the power to overcome all sin. But as we do all that we are able, the Lord provides the power that is lacking. WE must provide the will and the perseverance though. We will have to STRUGGLE against sin all our lives. We still live in fleshly bodies that will ALWAYS tend to lead us into sin. But we must OVERCOME. Once we are born again, we are no longer SLAVES to sin--we have a choice. Foolish is the man or woman who surrenders themself again, to the cruel master they were purchased from and set free from.
