New Caledonia is quite underrated destination to visit amongst other South Pacific countries like Fiji, Cook Islands, Samoa. And being its governed under French government means French is the most widely spoken language. It can be quite hard not knowing basic French especially if travelling outside Noumea, the capital. In general, things can be quite expensive too. Though I was always wanting to visit this country. So I made plan to stay for 11 days. I also believe a saying When theres a will, there will be a way. What I found during my time here was nothing but very warm and hospitable people. From the moment I sat on the plane having local people sitting next to me offered to drop me to my hostel and open their house for me for lovely Christmas dinner, then there were smiling faces I chat to at the bus stop, beach, hostel, camping, there were also Petangue enthusiasts (lawn games) Ive encountered on a couple of occasions, last but not least friendly strangers who picked me up hitch hiking around the island of Ils des Pins. My French is limited I have to say but I never see it as obstacle. Thank you all for your hospitality! I will cherish these memories forever :)
