New Course for Winter 2014!!! PHL 338: Philosophy of Health, Disease and Illness w/ Dr. Jami Anderson T and TH 2:30pm-3:45pm In this course we will analyze such seemingly simply concepts as “health,” “illness,” “normalcy,” and “sanity” as well as the correlated concepts “disease,” “insanity,” and “abnormality.” We will analyze these concepts from a variety of disciplines, reading philosophical, legal, sociological, psychiatric and medical works. We will also consider arguments made by feminist, race theorist and disabilities studies scholars that these concepts are both a reflection of and an insight into the culture in which they grow and are sustained. Required texts: Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason, Michel Foucault The Birth of the Clinic: And Archaeology of Medical Perception, Michel Foucault A History of Disability, Henri-Jacques Stiker Cultural Locations of Disability, Sharon L. Snyder and David T. Mitchel Inventing the Feeble Mind: A History of Mental Retardation in the United States, James W. Trent The Myth of the Normal Curve, eds. Curt Dudley-Marling and Alex Gurn various pdfs available in blackboard Course Requirements: summaries: Students are required to write a summary of the key idea(s) of each days assigned reading. These summaries must identify the main ideas of the author’s argument. The summaries should be no more than a single page long, typed and are due at the start of class. papers: 4 papers are required. Each paper should be 5-7 pages long and will be a critical analysis of central philosophical ideas present in the assigned readings. participation: Active and productive class participation ensures both that the burdens of this course are distributed fairly and that all students learn effectively. Therefore attendance and quality participation is required.
