New Japanese Writing: Monkey Business Writers Speak Monday, October 13, 2014 4:00-6:00pm Literature Building Room 155 (de Certeau) Monkey Business is a Brooklyn-based annual literary journal focusing on new Japanese writers including Haruki Murakami, Yoko Ogawa and Hiromi Kawakami, also with contributions from distinguished American writers such as Paul Auster, Richard Powers and Steve Erickson. Three Japanese writers who have contributed to Monkey Business will visit UCSD to discuss the Japanese literary scene and read from their own work, accompanied by the editors/translators of the journal. Speakers: Hideo Furukawa (novelist, Mishima Award), Hiromi Ito (poet, novelist, essayist, Takami Jun Award), and Tomoka Shibasaki (novelist, Akutagawa Award) Moderators: Roland Kelts and Motoyuki Shibata (Monkey Business editors) Hideo Furukawa (b. 1966) is one of the most active and prolific writers in Japan today. Besides his prolific literary output, he gives numerous readings and frequently collaborates with artists and dancers. His novel Belka, Why Don’t You Bark? was translated by Michael Emmerich in 2012 (Haikasoru). Tomoka Shibasaki (b. 1973) is known for novels and stories that capture the sensibilities of young women living in cities. Her short stories in English translation have appeared in Monkey Business. Hiromi Ito (b. 1955) is a poet, novelist, essayist, and translator, and one of the most important female voices to come out in Japanese poetry of the late twentieth century. English translations include Killing Kanoko: Selected Poems by Hiromi Ito, translated by Jeffrey Angles (Action Books, 2009). Roland Kelts (b. 1968) is author of the best-selling Japanamerica (2007). He is contributing editor of Monkey Business. Motoyuki Shibata (b. 1954) is translator of contemporary American writers including Paul Auster and Steve Erickson. He is editor of Monkey Business.
