Ender Wiggin, a brilliant young mind, is recruited and trained to lead his fellow soldiers into a battle that will determine the future of Earth. Director: Gavin Hood Stars: Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin THE BUZZ: Ender Wiggins initial fate in the hands of Gavin Hood makes us want to question that people who decided to put the future of a potential franchise in the hands of the guy who directed The Wolverine. Though in the mix there are a couple savvy veteran producer types and one experienced cinematographer, a position where some people can literally call the shots. People we trust who have seen the movie -- including a handful of people who are vehemently against author Orson Scott Cards outspoken feelings on the gay community and marriage equality -- admit that Hood has done well by the source material. Last Vegas (2013) Certificate PG-13 105 min - Comedy Metascore: 46/100 (10 reviews) Three sixty-something friends take a break from their day-to-day lives to throw a bachelor party in Las Vegas for their last remaining single pal. Director: Jon Turteltaub Stars: Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline THE BUZZ: Instantly labelled as The Geriatric Hangover, the most surprising thing about Jon Turteltaubs latest is to realize that Kevin Kline is officially old. Free Birds (2013) Certificate PG 91 min - Animation | Comedy Metascore: 41/100 (8 reviews) Two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history - and get turkey off the holiday menu for good. Director: Jimmy Hayward Stars: Woody Harrelson, Owen Wilson, Dan Fogler, Amy Poehler THE BUZZ: Making a movie about talking turkeys on a mission to revise holiday history, with Woody Harrelson in the voice-over booth, is one of the best, most-baked movie ideas weve heard in a while. But we bet this one is barely in theaters come Thanksgiving. In terms of the latest from Richard Curtis (Love Actually), well see how Gleeson and co-star Rachel McAdams handle a story that makes us wonder if Nicholas Sparks has a sibling who is a mystical, sci-fi lover. Dallas Buyers Club (2013) - [Limited] Certificate R 117 min - Drama Metascore: 82/100 (16 reviews) The story of Texas electrician Ron Woodroof and his battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986, and his search for alternative treatments that helped established a way in which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies. Director: Jean-Marc Vallée Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto, Steve Zahn THE BUZZ: Can we now say that Matthew McConaugheys renaissance is merely an admirable career in which he segues from major to indie projects either as a leading man of part of an ensemble? Here, his partnership with Jean-Marc Vallee, who made The Young Victoria and the even better C.R.A.Z.Y., first made headlines for its subject matter, then McConaugheys dramatic weight loss in order to play the highly unlikeable Ron Woodroof in the late stages of his life. Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel Stars: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews, Douglas Hodge, Geraldine James THE BUZZ: Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall, The Experiment has weathered his first critical drubbing with his Princess Diana biography, but we imagine audiences will flock to Watts-as-Di over the first couple release weekends. Still, the thematic shift is a surprise from the director, and its also a rare occasion where you dont read glowing reviews of a Naomi Watts performance. Director: Jaco Van Dormael Stars: Jared Leto, Sarah Polley, Diane Kruger, Linh Dan Pham THE BUZZ: We will see how writer/director Jaco Van Dormaels slightly aged sci-fi concept holds up some four years after its original screenings. Timed to take advantage of the praise star Jared Leto is receiving for his supporting role in Dallas Buyers Club, this is a case where the smaller film is way less compelling than its more mainstream counterpart.
