New Navy Ford-class carriers are designed with a series of technological advances to support unmanned drone fleets and other emerging technologies. The first-class USS Gerald R. Ford, expected to begin service in 2016, is the first of three carriers that will become operational within the next 15 years, reports Defense Tech. Modifications include a larger flight deck, upgraded nuclear power plants, radar and landing gear, and increased on-board electrical capacity. These improvements are expected to dramatically enhance capability and lower costs, saving as much as $4 billion over the ships’ 50-year life cycle. defensesystems/articles/2013/07/22/navy-drone-fleet.aspx?s=ds_240713
