New ONS statistics show record levels of employment A new report from the Office for National Statistics shows that employment in the UK reached a record 29.87m in the three months to August – a rise of 155,000. The unemployment rate remained the same at 7.69% of the workforce, with youth unemployment down by 1,000 to 958,000. Over half of the rise in employment was caused by previously inactive people moving into work, meaning the number of jobless only fell 18,000 to 2.49m. The number of people claiming jobseekers allowance dropped at its fastest rate for 16 years, by 41,700 in September to 1.35m. Separate figures from the ONS show that public sector employees saw their earnings fall by 0.5% over the last year, while private sector workers saw their pay rise by 1.1% in the same period. The figures represent the first time that the average salary of a public sector worker has fallen for the first time since the ONS’s records began in 1999.
